Waste carriers licence cost in 2026

There is no single UK price. The fee depends on your tier and on which regulator you register with, and one of the four nations charges nothing at all for the common case.

Every figure above was read on the regulator's own page on 15 August 2026: gov.uk for England, NRW for Wales and SEPA for Scotland. We do not publish a Northern Ireland fee because DAERA's website would not answer our checks on that date. Check the live page before you pay.
The fees that catch people out
- Changing what you do costs £49.62 in England. gov.uk says you must tell the Environment Agency within 28 days if your organisation changes what it does, for example if you are registered as a carrier and start acting as a broker as well, and that this costs £49.62.
- Moving from lower tier to upper tier is a new registration, not an amendment. gov.uk states you must make a new registration, at £191.02, if you change from lower tier to upper tier or if your business type legally changes, for example from sole trader to limited company.
- Renewal is on you. The upper tier registration lasts 3 years. In Wales, NRW says it sends a reminder with a unique code 6 weeks before expiry; if you have not had one and your licence is about to expire, ring them.
- The fees move. The Environment Agency's waste (miscellaneous) charging scheme was updated on 19 May 2026 and states that all charges increase on 1 April 2027 and on 1 April annually in line with the Consumer Prices Index.
Why the cheapest answer is often free
A large share of the trades that ask this question only ever carry waste they produced themselves, and that is a lower tier activity: free to register, and gov.uk says it does not need renewing. The single fact that moves a business from free to £191.02 is usually construction or demolition waste. If you take out a bath, a sink or a fence, you are in the upper tier even though the waste is your own (NRW).
